Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Stress is a pervasive issue in modern society, affecting individuals’ physical and mental health. Comedy films have emerged as a therapeutic medium, providing a temporary escape and reducing stress levels through laughter. Studies show that laughter triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals, which improve mood and reduce tension (Aliyu & Musa, 2023). In Wamakko Local Government Area, Sokoto State, where economic and social challenges contribute to heightened stress levels, comedy films serve as a vital source of relief and emotional well-being (Yusuf & Ibrahim, 2024). The growing popularity of comedy films underscores their significance in promoting mental health, making it essential to explore their influence on stress reduction.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the potential benefits of comedy films in alleviating stress, there is limited empirical evidence on their effectiveness in rural and semi-urban communities like Wamakko. Many residents face barriers such as limited access to recreational activities, leaving them vulnerable to the adverse effects of chronic stress. This study addresses the gap by examining the role of comedy films in stress management, particularly in areas with minimal mental health resources (Garba, 2023).

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To explore the stress-relief mechanisms associated with watching comedy films.
  2. To assess the impact of comedy films on stress levels in Wamakko.
  3. To identify factors that influence the accessibility and effectiveness of comedy films in stress reduction.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How do comedy films contribute to stress relief?
  2. What is the impact of comedy films on stress levels in Wamakko?
  3. What challenges affect the use of comedy films for stress reduction?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Comedy films significantly reduce stress levels among viewers in Wamakko.
  2. Regular exposure to comedy films improves overall mental well-being.
  3. Accessibility to comedy films influences their effectiveness in stress reduction.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study highlights the importance of comedy films as a cost-effective and accessible tool for stress management, offering practical recommendations for filmmakers, mental health advocates, and policymakers.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the influence of comedy films on stress reduction in Wamakko Local Government Area, Sokoto State.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Comedy Films: Motion pictures designed to entertain and provoke laughter.
  • Stress Reduction: The process of alleviating mental or emotional strain.
  • Wamakko: A local government area in Sokoto State, Nigeria.
